A day in the life of Leah, a Phd student in Edinburgh

I'll get up at...

I will get up at around 8:30/9:00 am. The 8th of March is my birthday, and it's great to be a feminist and share it with International Women's Day!

And then I...

I will have my breakfast and have a shower and get ready for university. I will have already made my lunch the night before, and sometimes my partners if he likes what I am making. I will take the bus to work, and will spend majority of the day there.

My day will consist of...

I am studying a PhD so my day will consist of conducting a literature review on domestic abuse policy in Scotland, as well as responding to emails. I will spend some time with friends at lunch time to allow me to have a break, but the majority of my day I will spend at my desk alone. On a Wednesday I have a research group that we meet to discuss gender issues and our research.

I'll look after...

As I do not work full-time, and am flexible with my work days I am generally the person in the household that does most of the housework. This is usually washing dishes, clothes, and cooking. My partner helps out around the house too with the dishes and clothes etc, therefore I do not necessarily 'look after' him. We always joke that I am the 'manager' of the household, and without me the flat would fall apart. The gendered dynamic of my relationship sometimes bothers me, and is something that we have discussed. However, it is nowhere near as bad as my parents or my sister and her husband where the women do all of the work.

Other things I'll do in the day are...

On a Wednesday I have a ballet class at university that I love. My partner will have the dinner ready for me coming in after the class (however I am the one to organise what we are having, and explain to him how to cook it). We will eat and watch a bit television.

I'll go to bed after...

I cannot fall asleep without reading a book. I will go to bed around 10-11pm, and this bedtime routine is mostly due to my partner working 9-5. However, it gives me structure and I find it especially helpful to stop myself from staying up working.
