a day in the life of Emma, a policy manager in Edinburgh

I'll get up at...

6:45AM

And then I...

To stall getting out of bed, I'll check my home email. I'll then read the BBC and the Guardian to catch the headlines.I also eventually start checking work emails once I've made my morning cup of tea. I check Twitter (and secretly hope I'll have new friends). If it's sunny out, I'll go for a quick run. Then stare at my closet for too long trying to decide what to wear; eating breakfast; wishing my comfy trainers were appropriate footwear for every work occasion.

My day will consist of...

During the day, heading to Glasgow from Edinburgh for a day-long conference on Triage and Diversion (in the context of prisons). And hoping that there are engaging and thought-provoking discussions on how Gov't / criminal justice system can create more alternatives to custody. That'll be during the day. In the evening, once back in Edinburgh, I'm meeting with some folks to discuss how to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Angiolini Report (commission on women offenders). On the train I'll be reading research on gender quotas on public boards. Esp. the success/benefit some countries have seen after implementing gender quotas. This is related to work.

I also have to start on my thesis defence, which is scheduled for the end of March and which I keep putting off. I also have to read up on the child benefit top-up because I'm meeting with an MSP (who sits on the social security committee) on Thursday and I don't want to sound like I don't know what I'm talking about.

I'll look after...

As in people? Just me and my flatmate (who has started a new job and feeling overwhelmed by it). I need to look after stuff related to my flat in Canada and finish my Canadian taxes. I hate doing both, so I keep putting it off. But both are on my daily to-do list.

Other things I'll do in the day are...

I need to grocery shop, if only to get food for dinner. If I don't run in the morning, I'll try to squeeze in some form of exercise in the evening. Truthfully, I might use my walk from Queen St. station to my meeting as my day's exercise.

I'll go to bed after...

Like after I've done everything? Or time wise? Definitely won't get everything done, but all of those items above will be on my mind. Bedtime: after 11PM usually.
