A day in the life of a woman in Scotland

I'll get up at...

6am (if the cat lets me sleep that long - could be around 5am!)

And then I...

Have a shower and get myself dressed and ready for the day, make the bed, feed my animal family, fold the washing, wash and put away any dishes, clean the surfaces etc - a general tidy around so we're not coming home to a messy house. I won't usually have time for breakfast until I get to work, when I will have something light at my desk. My commute takes nearly an hour so I can't afford to leave later than 7.30am.

My day will consist of...

Predominantly working at my paid job 8.30am-4.30pm, then studying for my part-time postgraduate qualification for two or three hours in the evening. Whether I get a lunch break will depend on my workload on the day, but often I eat at my desk.

I'll look after...

Myself (hopefully!) and my animal family. I have a long-term mental health condition so I often need to adjust my days a little for self-care. Like most women I can't really afford to get ill!

Other things I'll do in the day are...

Try to fit in a walk to get my minimum 30 minutes of exercise. I'll need to fit in laundry in the evening and probably a trip to the shops for a few supplies too. Depending on organisation demands and staffing levels I may need to fit my own workload around general support including doing a stint at reception, answering telephones, assisting with enquiries etc.

I'll go to bed after...

I'll probably make it to bed by about 10pm - I'm lucky in that despite having a long-term mental health condition, providing I'm not experiencing an episode of illness I will usually get around 6 hours of sleep or perhaps more. I don't think many women are so lucky!
